This is a book, not a kit. This title is volume number 6 of the flagship Airframe and Miniature series of the British publisher Valiant Wings Publishing. The volumes in the series are divided into a part on the airframe (development, variants, technical description, detail photographs and camouflage) and a modeling part (available kits, built models, surveys of accessories, masks and decals). The author is Richard A. Franks. It takes in the early Mustangs: the A-36, the P-51 and the P-51A to P-51C versions.
The Mustang came about to a British requirement in 1940 and was given a laminar flow wing profile, which gave it low drag and great range. The early machines were powered by the American Allison V-1710: at low altitude they were fast, at high altitude they fell away, and so they turned into reconnaissance and attack aircraft. The A-36 was a dive attack machine with dive brakes and bomb racks, the P-51A a continuation of the fighter line. The turning point came only with the license-built Rolls-Royce Merlin from Packard in the P-51B and P-51C versions — with it the Mustang became the escort fighter that could reach Germany with the bombers and get back.
For modelers of the early Mustangs. Take note: this volume takes in the A-36, P-51, P-51A and P-51B with P-51C versions — that is the machines with a spine behind the cockpit. Do not look in it for the late P-51D and P-51K with the bubble canopy.
