An injection-molded plastic kit of the heavy crane helicopter Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane from the Ukrainian manufacturer ICM in 1:35. Besides the helicopter itself the boxing contains the slung universal pod, which is hung under the lattice spine of the fuselage. In the package there are sprues of injection-molded plastic, clear parts for the extensive glazing of the cabin and decals. Given the scale it is a sizeable model; reckon with enough room in a display case.
The S-64 Skycrane is the civil derivative of the military CH-54 Tarhe. The structure is deliberately stripped bare: between the cabin and the tail boom there is no cargo hold but an open lattice spine, on which loads or interchangeable pods are hung. It was powered by two turboshaft engines and the main rotor has six blades. A particularity is the rear pilot station turned against the direction of flight, from which the operator watches the load and sets it down precisely. The machine proved itself in erection work, in carrying oversized loads, in fighting fires and in rescue operations; the universal pod turns it into a full transport vehicle.
Use a thin cement for plastic models on the plastic, which runs into the seam by capillary action. Finish and paint the interior and the cabin before you close the fuselage up, as the glazing is large and the cabin will be visible. Glue the clear parts with a cement for clear plastics or with a thin layer of white glue, so that they do not go cloudy, and mask them before spraying. Assemble the lattice structure and the rotor head on a flat board and keep checking the alignment, so that the model does not sit twisted. Apply a primer before painting, spray the main surfaces with an airbrush and bring out the edges and the riveted detail with a light wash. The slung pod offers scope for wear: scuffs, dust and traces of the load.
