The set represents the single-seat Lavochkin La-5 fighter of the Soviet wartime air force. Under the Zvezda brand it comes in 1:72 scale, a format that fits comfortably into an ordinary display case and alongside a larger collection. What you buy are raw parts, and the decision about the color scheme and the degree of wear stays with you.
The type grew out of the unsuccessful LaGG-3: the design team exchanged the liquid-cooled V12 engine for the powerful air-cooled Shvetsov M-82 radial. That fundamentally raised the rate of climb and the speed at low level and turned a below-average airframe into an equal opponent of the German fighters. The structure remained largely wooden, because aluminum was in permanent short supply in the Soviet industry of the day. The aircraft proved itself in combat from the autumn of 1942 in the area of Stalingrad and served until the end of the war; a number of the most successful Soviet pilots flew it.
The engine section with the radial, the exhausts and the cooling flaps calls for the most work. It pays to dry-fit it and refine the seams before the fuselage is closed for good. Eastern camouflage schemes tend to be two-tone on top with soft transitions and light blue underneath; freehand spraying at a lower pressure looks more faithful at this reduction than a sharp masked edge.
The package contains parts to be glued, not a finished product; glue and paints are obtained separately.
