A ship's boat was part of the equipment of every larger sailing ship. A big vessel often could not reach the shore at all; it anchored in open water and the link with the land was provided by exactly such a boat. It carried the crew, drinking water and cargo, it could manage shallows and a narrow harbor, and in an emergency it served for abandoning the ship. It was built of planks laid over wooden ribs, it was driven by oars and the crew handled it from benches set across the hull.
It is a kit of injection-molded polystyrene. The parts are held on sprues, from which they are clipped with nippers, and they are glued with ordinary modeling cement for polystyrene. The model is small in 1:72 scale, so the parts are handled with tweezers.
The hull holds its shape only once the benches and the ribs are glued in, so let them dry in the correct position and only then go on. In this scale wood is imitated best with a lighter base and a darker glaze wiped off in the direction of the grain. A wash run into the seams between the planks will bring the structure of the hull out better than drawing lines with a brush. It pays to darken the metal fittings and the oar mountings so that they stand apart from the wood.
The model will please collectors of historical vessels and it also suits an addition to a larger scene, for example a harbor mole or the side of a larger ship in the same scale. Given the small parts it is better suited to a builder who already has something behind him. Paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
