An injection-molded plastic kit of the German fighter Messerschmitt Bf 109E in 1:72 scale from manufacturer Special Hobby. This edition, named Staffelkapitäne, offers markings of aircraft flown by Luftwaffe squadron leaders (Staffelkapitäne). The kit allows building the E-4, E-4B, or E-7 version and, besides plastic parts, also includes 3D-printed accessories. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, ready to be glued and painted. The exact package contents and the number of decal schemes are given in the included instruction sheet.
The Messerschmitt Bf 109E, nicknamed Emil, was a key version of the German fighter at the start of the Second World War and the main opponent of British fighters in the Battle of Britain. It was powered by the twelve-cylinder Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine with direct fuel injection. The E-4 version had stronger cannon armament in the wings, while the E-7 gained the ability to carry a drop tank or a bomb, extending its use to ground-attack missions as a fighter-bomber (Jabo). The rank Staffelkapitän corresponds to a squadron leader — the equivalent of an RAF squadron leader.
Clean the parts of mold seams and glue with thin liquid cement for plastic; work carefully with the 3D-printed accessories and glue them with cyanoacrylate (super glue). Apply a primer coat before painting. The typical German camouflage with gray shades on the upper surfaces and a light underside stands out best with an airbrush, using fine transitions and panel shading. Water-slide decals carry the squadron leader markings and tactical insignia; a final matte varnish coat unifies the surface and blends the decals into it.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
