DESERT CAMO is the paint a model is usually started with. A sandy tone pulled slightly toward gray serves as the overall coat of equipment deployed in dry regions, from tracked vehicles through trucks to transport crates and tents. On figures it covers the trousers and the blouse and the rest of the work is then taken care of by shadows and scuffs alone.
With camouflage in particular the order pays off. The light overall tone goes onto the model first, and only then are darker patches laid onto it, never the other way around. A light color would need more coats over a dark one and the edge of a patch would lose its sharpness. If a stencil is used for the camouflage, it is held a few millimeters above the surface, so that the edge softens slightly.
A desert is not single-colored and a model should not look that way either. Convincingness is added when a thin coat of a lighter tone is laid onto the horizontal surfaces as evidence of fading from the sun and the lower parts are dusted with a soil shade. The transitions are blurred with a brush while the paint is damp.
Anyone building a scene with sand can unify the base with this tone as well. The model and the surface then hold together optically, which is more engaging than individual details carried out ever so well without a connection to one another.
