Kraken Green opens the green group in the maker's numbering and carries over from the preceding blues a clear cold undertone. It is neither the green of a leaf nor the green of a uniform, but the cold, slightly bluish one a person associates with a creature hauled up from the depths. From that follows its casting as well: sea monsters, lizard and snake skin, frog and fish figures, tentacles, webbing and scales.
A scaly surface is painted differently from cloth. It is not about soft transitions but about emphasizing the individual facets. The proven procedure is to lay this tone as the base, run a thinned darker paint into the grooves between the scales and then go over the raised edges with a dry brush in a lighter green tone, so that every scale gets a highlight of its own on top.
Besides fantastical creatures the shade suits the deep-water parts of ship hulls below the waterline, damp moss and algae on stones by water, oxidized brass metal and the dark glass bottles in a tavern diorama. If it is thinned into a very thin glaze and spread over dried gray rock, a convincing impression of a permanently damp surface arises. The same trick works on wooden piers and on the lower parts of posts, where water would splash up from the surface.
