Ochre Desert carries the color of dry desert earth, that is a warm ocher with a hint of brown. It is one of those tones that appear on a model in two roles at once: as the soil of a base and as the light component of the desert camouflage of a vehicle standing on that same ground. When both come out of the same bottle, a scene holds together of its own accord.
On terrain it proves useful to lay the shade onto a coarsely textured area and let it dry matte. Then a brown shade is run into the recesses, which brings out the definition, and the grains of sand and the edges of the stones are pulled out with a dry brush. Three steps, and bare paste turns into parched soil.
Anyone working with an airbrush will appreciate that after a slight thinning with acrylic thinner the shade is applied in thin veils and allows gradual dusting to be modeled from the ground upward. With a brush the work goes straight from the bottle, and thinning with water is possible at any time.
Warm ochers moreover take the neighborhood of green and gray tones well. In a modeling palette they therefore tend to be the link between vegetation and equipment and their consumption is higher than that of pronounced colors, which fall only on small areas.
The last recommendation concerns distance. Apply the paint to terrain in two doses and look the model over between them from an ordinary viewing distance. The ground is to look uniform, small differences of shade get lost from fifty centimeters.
