A tool from DSPIAE for scribing lines parallel to the edge of a part. It is a modeling tool, not a kit or a part for a model. The principle is simple: the support part of the tool is guided along the edge of the part while the tip scribes a groove at a constantly equal distance from it, so that the line does not wander even at the end of the stroke.
Why a parallel line does not come out freehand
Scribed lines are more visible after painting than one expects, because a wash draws into them and emphasizes every inaccuracy. Guiding along a strip of tape works over a short stretch, but the tape twists on a rounded surface and the groove gradually drifts under the pressure of the tip. A tool supported against the edge removes this problem, because it holds the distance from the edge mechanically rather than by eye.
The most common use is after filling. A seam you have filled and sanded down usually swallows the original scribed lines around it as well, and they have to be restored so that they run on with the rest of the part. The tool serves just as well when laying out new lines on a smooth surface where there is nothing to hold on to.
For modelers who repair and add scribed detail and do not want to rely on the eye while doing it. It comes into its own on aircraft and on vehicles, that is wherever a surface has regular divisions and where any inaccuracy shows once the lines are emphasized.
Scribe with light repeated passes, not with one heavy one. The tip is sharp, always guide it away from your body and store the tool out of the reach of children. A replacement tip for this tool is made as a separate item.
