What the screw heads are for

On a motorcycle model a screwed joint is not hidden under sheet metal as it is on a car. It is visible almost everywhere: on the frame, on the mounting of the brake discs, on the engine covers, on the footpegs and on the exhaust. Injection-molded imitations tend to be flat, with soft edges, and seen from close by they look like mere dots. Separate heads replace them with a sharp shape that catches a shadow and holds it even under paint.

The size and the workmanship

This item carries heads of cone shape with a star-shaped torx profile, that is with a six-point recess in the middle. The marked size is 1.2 mm; it is the larger of the sizes the line offers and suits places where the screw is to be seen as an element in its own right and not just as a suggested dot. The cone shape fits into countersunk seats, where the head is to sink into the surface rather than stand out of it.

How to seat them

First try out on a hidden place how large a hole you need; choose the drill bit so that the part sits without pressure. Seat the heads on a drop of cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin, because any excess runs at once on a part this size and fills the recess. Work with fine-tipped tweezers over a container, not over a carpet. Degrease the parts before painting and spray them with a primer; on a smooth surface the paint will not hold by itself and will rub off during handling. The metal look is drawn out by a dark base and a light polish with metallic pigment.
