0.9 mm, a proper intermediate step between 0.8 mm and a full millimeter. It is used where the neighboring size looks either too small or, on the contrary, too heavy. A final varnish helps to even the look out with the surrounding parts.

0.9 mm is sometimes overlooked in the range, because it lies between two more conspicuous values. And yet it is exactly such an intermediate step that solves the situation where 0.8 mm looks timid on the given surface and a full millimeter already overloads it. In building practice it proves useful to have the intermediate step at hand and to try both neighboring sizes dry side by side before the decision is made.
A model tends to be put together from parts of various origins and each of them reflects light in its own way. A final layer of clear varnish, whether matte or satin, evens those differences out and the whole stops looking glued together from bits. Small heads benefit from it the most: an evened-out reflection is exactly what the eye reads as unity of material. At the same time a thin clear layer protects the surface against fingerprints during further handling, which counts on a piece that will be displayed.
Keep the bag closed and dry. Unsealed pieces left lying loose in a workshop take in dust and grease from the air and after a year they glue worse, even though they look untouched from the outside. A closable box with compartments lasts and saves a later wash in a bath with degreaser before you set to work.
Calipers help only in part, because the touch of the jaws moves a piece this light before the value can be read. More practical is a comparison with a drill bit of known diameter: what passes close around the head is roughly the match. Nobody applies accuracy to hundredths during a build anyway.
