Five sizes are a test sampler

A graded package has one advantage over a single diameter that is often forgotten: it lets you try out the surface finish before you start on the piece that matters. The procedure is verified on the heaviest grade, where a mistake shows up clearly, and only then carried over to the finer sizes, where the eye would no longer catch it in time.

How to run the test

• Apply to the heaviest piece as many coats as the finished model is to have.
• Look under a magnifier at how much depth of the recess is left.
• According to the result take a coat away or thin the paint, and only then continue.
• Leave the remaining pieces on the same base, so that the shade matches.

A descending difference

Between the extreme grades of the package there is a difference of four tenths of a millimeter, which in this field is a chasm. The heaviest piece takes twice the coating of the finest one, so a uniform procedure across the whole package leads to an uneven result. It pays to take away as the diameter falls, even at the cost of the smaller pieces ending up a little lighter.

The band covered includes 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 mm, each grade in the version with a widened disc under the head.

One more note on storing the remainder. Once the package is opened the individual grades cease to be distinguishable without measuring, so it is useful to divide the contents straight away into numbered compartments. Determining the diameter afterward calls for a micrometer, and even with one it is work for a long while.
