A hex head 1.8 mm. A coarse grade on which the color distinction of metal joints from the surrounding surface stands out.

Real joints are rarely glossy. After a few months of use there is a film of oxides on them, grease, dust and sometimes the mark of a wrench that slipped. It is precisely this unevenness that distinguishes a believable scale model from one in which all the heads are uniformly silver.
With the coarser grades this is easiest to work with, because there is room to put two shades side by side. The proven procedure has three steps: first a dark highlighter into the recesses around the head, then a lighter tone drybrushed onto the edges, and finally a small spot of a rusty or, on the contrary, a cleanly metallic shade on one or two places out of ten. Never on all of them.
Keep something glossy too: where a wrench sits on the machine regularly, the surface is on the contrary polished and lighter than its surroundings. One such head among fifteen tarnished ones tells more about maintenance than any amount of uniform aging.
Before painting it pays to let the pieces settle for a day after seating. A freshly glued joint has glue around it that has not yet reached its final hardness, and a thin brush with thinner can dissolve it. Patience here saves work that a new fitting of a whole row would otherwise cost. One extra day of waiting is always less work than an extra evening of work.
