The real subject

The Messerschmitt Bf 109E, known among modelers by the nickname Emil, is a single-seat fighter with an enclosed cockpit and retractable landing gear. It is precisely this version that is most closely tied to the first years of the Second World War and it ranks among the most frequently built subjects of all. The narrow-track landing gear with its fairly small wheels is one of its typical features, so on a model it draws more attention than you would expect from such a small part.

Wheels in a box tend to be simplified, among other things in the tread pattern and in the transition of the tire into the rim, and the swap shows on a finished model from an ordinary viewing distance when seen from above. Building and painting tips

The parts are not polystyrene and cement for plastic will not join them; use super glue or a two-part adhesive and degrease the surfaces before joining. Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest down so that the circular outline of the wheel is preserved. Wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent before painting. If the wheels have a weighted bulge, turn the flattened part toward the ground. Paint the rim separately from the tire; a masking ring or patient brushwork once the base color has dried will help.
