Four children with bicycles resting at an old soda machine. A genre scene in a ratio of 1:87 for a small-town layout.
Responsibility details are not available.
Four children have ridden up on their bicycles and stopped at an aging soda machine. The set therefore offers a small story: the end of a ride, a moment of standing about and talking, bicycles leaning against something or dropped to one side. It is exactly scenes like these that turn a layout into an inhabited place.
A chilled machine for bottled drinks stood for decades in front of a gas station, a general store and a station waiting room. It was a natural meeting place for the children of the neighborhood, a stop on the way where people waited until somebody had small change. A model of this small thing tells more about a period and a place than a whole extra building.
The figures are of the size usual for the most common size of layout, that is a reduction of 1:87. The scene suits a little shop by the line, a street corner, a stop or the fence of a warehouse, simply where there is shade and a bit of free sidewalk.
The little group also works as a guide to the size of the surroundings: from the height of the children a viewer judges for himself how high the fence behind them is or the counter inside the shop. Place the bicycles so that two stand and two lie on the grass, as the mismatch reads more naturally than a regular row. The machine benefits from a light emphasis on the edges and a hint of rust at the foot, because new and shiny it would look in the scene like a piece recently delivered rather than a veteran that has stood there for years.
