A pair of flexible abrasive pads in grade 4000, the last step before polishing or varnishing.
Responsibility details are not available.
A grade of four thousand lies on the boundary where sanding turns into polishing. The mark it leaves is barely perceptible to the naked eye, and the surface afterwards looks satin rather than flat. It is with this grade that work with abrasive is usually closed off, before polishing compound or a gloss varnish takes its turn.
You will appreciate this grade most on canopies and headlights. A scratch on a clear part is removed step by step. First level it with a coarser grade, then move on to this one and finally polish with a cloth and compound. Clarity comes back the faster the fewer steps you skip. Leaving out one intermediate grade shows up as a milky veil that no polish will level out afterwards.
Avoid heating the material. Fast rubbing heats the surface up, it fogs from within and the part is damaged beyond recovery. Work in short strokes, give the plastic a moment to cool between them, and rather work with a drop of water, which carries the heat away.
It enters the sequence second to last. Shaping and removing the mold seam are handled by a coarser abrasive, and this grade only levels its mark and prepares the surface for compound. If you want to leave the surface flat, you can finish the work here; the satin look after a very fine grade looks natural under a matte varnish. On metal parts, for example on brass barrel tubing, the same grade gives an even silky sheen.
