A textured styrene sheet with clapboard detail at a pitch of 1.3 mm. The groove is deep enough for the shadow to stay readable after painting, which is not the case with the finest pitches.
Responsibility details are not available.
The base is white styrene one millimeter thick with an area of 15 x 30 cm. The horizontal grooves are 1.3 mm apart and run the whole length of the longer side.
With textured surfaces something other than the density of the detail decides the result: whether the groove survives painting. A sprayed coat of paint is about five hundredths of a millimeter thick, a brushed coat easily a tenth. A primer and three covering coats therefore take almost half a millimeter out of the depth of the groove. A pitch of around 1.3 mm belongs to the group where the cut is still pronounced enough to cast a shadow when finished; on sheets with a pitch under half a millimeter the surface smooths out after the third coat and all that is left is a flat rectangle.
Where the reduction itself comes from: 1.3 mm multiplied by eighty-seven gives one hundred and thirteen millimeters, that is, an entirely ordinary clapboard for railroad sizes. A multiple of forty-two works out at fifty-five millimeters, which is more of a narrow batten than cladding. From that it follows that this pitch belongs to small buildings, huts and station shelters, not to the foreground of a large scene.
The recommended painting procedure is the opposite of that for smooth surfaces: first a darker tone over the whole area, then a lightened coat thin enough to run off the edges without flooding the bottom of the groove. A dry brush over the finished surface then lifts the detail further.
The joint between two neighboring pieces is the most conspicuous place on a whole wall of a model. The surest solution is to run it exactly along the bottom of one groove and to cover it from above with a vertical strip of thin material, which on a real building corresponds to a cover batten. The other option is to shift the seams of the individual walls so that they fall at the corner of the building, where a corner trim will hide them. A sanded and filled joint looks good only until sharp light falls on the surface.
