Cold Steel - metallic acrylic from AK interactive, Quick Gen Color range

Cold Steel is a steel metallic shade from the Quick Gen Color range. It is a water-thinnable acrylic meant for figures and gaming models, not a lacquer. A cold metal shifted toward blue suits blades, barrels, chains and anywhere the metal is meant to read as cold and new, unlike the warmer shades such as bronze or old gold.

Learn to read the bottle before you open it

With metallic shades you can tell the state of the paint before you take the cap off. Hold the bottle up to the light: a clear band at the top is separated binder, while a continuous dark column means the paint is mixed. The taller the band, the longer the stirring ahead of you. Do not speed it up with heat; warming an acrylic in hot water or on a radiator does the binder no good and the shade can curdle irreversibly. Patience and mechanics are enough: long shaking, turning the bottle upside down and finally stirring with a toothpick straight in the bottle when the sediment is hard. Take the paint out with a pipette or a stick onto a palette, not with a brush from the bottle.

Use

• Blades, barrels, axe edges, chains and metal accessories on figures.
• Over a smooth ground the shade reads as polished metal, over a rough one as worn steel.
• A dry brush with a little of this paint pulls out the edges of scuffed metal surfaces.
• It combines with a dark wash, which brings out engraving and joints.
