Three depot attendants with travel trunks, furniture and luggage. One is checking a passenger list. A ratio of 1:87.
Responsibility details are not available.
Three men are working the platform. The first is checking a passenger list, the remaining two are hauling travel trunks, furniture and bags belonging to the people on the train. Luggage therefore belongs with the figures, which makes the set a complete scene of handling rather than just three separate figures.
As long as passenger trains carried luggage separately from the passengers, depot service was a physically demanding trade. Trunks were moved on a cart to the baggage car, heavier pieces of furniture were loaded by hand and the list was checked off against a paper record, because otherwise a lost crate was hunted for weeks. This routine went on at every larger station several times a day.
The set is reduced to a ratio of 1:87, so it matches cars and platforms built for the most common size of layout. It fits best at a baggage car, at the door of a depot building or at a ramp where a load has been set down.
Credibility is helped if you set some of the luggage out apart from the figures, as if it had been standing there a while waiting to be loaded. Trunks will take various shades of brown and battered edges; furniture, on the other hand, looks better left uniform, because a set being moved usually belonged to one family.
