A turf is a piece of finished growth complete with its base that is set onto already finished terrain. Compared with a loose scatter it has the advantage of holding its shape and creating a difference in height, with which a scene stops reading as flat at once. Small turfs suit places where tall grass would get in the way: along tracks and rails, at the feet of posts and fences, into the joints between paving or on the edge of a ditch.
The spring tuning aims at a fresh green with no dry or scorched tones. It suits scenes from early in the year, when the growth is low and uniform in color, and it goes well with muddy terrain. It can be worked into a summer or autumn scene as well, but it is advisable to blend it with its surroundings using a thin veil of thinned paint sprayed from a distance. Equally, the spring green can be toned down with a light dusting of dry pigment, which gives the growth a dusty touch from the road.
