Dunkelgelb Nach Muster-Dark Yellow acc. to Sample

The color

The paint carries the German name Dunkelgelb and its English counterpart Dark Yellow, that is dark yellow. The qualifier nach Muster means according to a sample: the shade is not based on a number in a color chart but on a particular original by which it was mixed. For a modeler an important thing follows from that. Dark yellow is not one fixed tone, and there tend to be noticeable differences between the individual versions, so it pays to compare the shade with the color scheme you are building and not to rely on the name alone.

Where dark yellow comes into its own

Dark yellow is the classic base tone of multi-color camouflage finishes: it is laid over the whole surface and the green and brown patches then come over it. It will serve well on its own too, because a yellow surface takes shading and subsequent emphasis on the edges nicely. On small parts and on accessories for a scene it suits anywhere a subdued sand to ocher surface is needed.

How to work with the paint

Yellow pigments are among the poorer covering ones, so it pays to lay the paint over a light foundation and to add rather more thin coats than one heavy one. Always stir the bottle thoroughly first, as the pigment settles at the bottom. Apply it onto a clean and degreased surface and let the paint dry between coats. Check the coverage and the resulting tone in advance on a test piece, because yellow looks different on a dark ground than on a light one. The thinning ratio, the pressure when spraying and the cleaning of tools follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.
