An earth undercoat in a brown-green tone for fields, field boundaries and forest soil. It covers light terrain and makes it possible to spread scatter into the damp layer. The bottle holds 236 milliliters.

Landscape away from a damp meadow has a different underlying tone than anyone painting grass green would expect. Under stubble, on a field boundary, in forest undergrowth and at the edge of a dirt road the soil shows through, and that soil is brown with a touch of green according to how much old vegetation is left on it. This coat is mixed to exactly such a transitional tone, so it works even where the growth is only to be suggested and the base is counted on to be visible.
The layer fills three tasks at once. First, it covers light plaster or foam, so that no white spot shows through thin scatter. Second, it closes an absorbent surface, which shows only later, during the fixing of scatter with thinned glue: plaster that is not closed soaks it up and the material then crumbles. Third, it holds the scatter material itself as long as it is damp.
It is applied with a flat brush in sections and it is not spared, because a thin layer will not cover the base. At the boundaries between kinds of ground it pays off to go over into the green tone with a wet edge, so that no line is sharp, because in nature a field passes into a meadow gradually. Once it is dry the area can be broken up further with dry pigment, for example by lightening the ruts left by a tractor or, the other way round, darkening the hollows where water stands.
It is good to wipe the neck of the bottle after every use, as otherwise a dried deposit will not let the lid close next time and the rest of the content hardens. Brushes are washed out in water while the layer is fresh; once dry it stays in the bristles for good and the tuft splays out to the sides, so a straight edge can no longer be drawn with it.
