Form'it - Construction Foil 40 x 80 cm - Sandstone

What it is

Construction foil from the Form it range, a sheet measuring 40 x 80 cm, that is 0.32 square meters. The surface carries the structure of sandstone: softer, bedded faces with horizontal ledges and more rounded edges, of the kind exposed sandstone has in a cutting or in an abandoned quarry. The foil serves as a terrain surface which you lay on a load-bearing framework, shape by hand and then simply paint.

Where you will use it

• a rock face above a line, in a cutting or above a road
• the wall of a sandstone quarry
• a retaining wall and a base course at a station
• the bank of a stream and a rock outcrop on a slope

How to work with it

Prepare the rough shape of the terrain in advance, for example from blocks of polystyrene or strips of cardboard, so that the foil has something to rest on. Cut the sheet with an overlap, lay it in dry and try the shape; only then fix it with a glue suited to your surface, having checked how it behaves on an offcut first. Cut the overlaps off and run the joints between the individual pieces where a bedding crevice would run in real rock, that is never straight across a whole face. You will find the exact procedure for forming and fixing in the manufacturer's instructions.

Color fine-tuning

Sandstone is painted differently from granite: start with a warm ocher or pale rusty base over the whole area, then apply a thin darker glaze which runs into the crevices and draws out the beds, and finally go over the edges with a dry brush and a very pale shade. Add fine scree and small fragments at the foot of the face, so that the face does not end in mid-air; sandstone crumbles and it shows below a face.
