A stone wall in a large scale

In the 0 and 1 sizes everything shows. While in smaller scales it is enough to suggest masonry, here the viewer makes out individual stones, the width of a joint and whether the wall has any bond at all. A ready-made stone wall texture therefore saves many hours of work and, above all, keeps the surface regular where hand modeling would give away every inaccurate stone.

Size and use

The surface measures 28 x 40 centimeters, which in large scales is a sensible piece for a retaining wall by a line, for the base course of a station or farm building, for the facing of a bridge abutment, for the perimeter wall of a yard or for lining a cutting. The greater height also makes it possible to cover a taller wall with no horizontal joint, which on a stone wall would catch the eye at once.

Painting tips

Stone never has one color. First lay on an overall base tone in a thin coat, after it has dried add a darker glaze that runs into the joints and creates shadow, and finally pass a dry brush lightly over the edges. Paint a few stones in a different shade, otherwise the surface looks mass-produced. The lower part of a wall at ground level tends to be darker and dirtier, the upper edge washed out by rain instead. In a large scale it pays to spend time on the joints as well, because it is they that carry the whole impression.
