The double package 1:144 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Ia (Commissioning Edition) holds two aircraft, cut masks for the canopy and Cartograf decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
This edition stands above the ordinary package of the same type in what it holds. The box hides two complete kits, extra parts for the early Mk.I, for the Mk.II and for the photo-reconnaissance conversion, cut masks for the glazing and decals from the Cartograf printworks. Documentation printed in full color belongs to it as well.
The Mk.Ia represented the Spitfire in the state in which it entered the Battle of Britain: a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, eight .303 caliber machine guns in the wing, a three-blade propeller, an armored windscreen and a bulged canopy that gave the pilot his view back. It was exactly this combination that made the machine an equal match for the Bf 109.
The schemes enclosed belong to two documented aircraft. P9546 flew with No. 19 Squadron RAF from Duxford in September 1940 with Flight Sergeant George Unwin, known as Grumpy; N3250 served with No. 92 Squadron at Croydon in May 1940 under Pilot Officer Allan Wright.
The masks save the most tiresome work of the whole project, because the framing of the glazing paints badly at this scale. The extra parts allow the pair to be built in different configurations, so a prewar and a combat machine can stand side by side. It pays to start the second build only once you have felt out the thickness of the paint on the first.
These are unpainted parts to be glued; chemicals and brushes are not enclosed.
