An interior is visible in a diorama only in a small part, but it is exactly that which decides whether a building works as a lived-in house or as a backdrop. A radiator under a window is one of those things a viewer half consciously expects there and notices only when it is missing. The set is therefore intended for interior scenes: for apartments in shot-up houses, for corridors, for workshops and for halls where the main action takes place.
Real radiators hang under windows and by outside walls, where the heating works against the chill from the glass, not in the middle of a room. Keep to that in a model too; it is a detail an experienced eye notices at once. In a wrecked scene a radiator torn away from the wall or hanging above a collapsed floor looks good; one piece can be left lying in the rubble. Radiators tend to have been painted over several times, so a coarser build-up of paint shows on them than on the surrounding wall.
