In a large scale nothing can be hidden. A helmet is several centimeters across, so every wrinkle in the film and every edge that does not lie down shows on it. It therefore pays to work slowly: position the decal with a damp brush, soak up the surplus water with a paper tissue and let the area dry completely before moving on to weathering. The reward is an insignia that looks like part of the surface of the helmet. How the helmet is painted underneath also shows in the final impression: on a smooth, even coat a decal adheres with no bubbles, while on a grainy surface air stays under the film and shows up as light patches.
