The real subject

The Phantom II was a two-seat twin-engined carrier fighter with jet engines. The F-4B version served from the beginning of the 1960s with the US Navy and the Marine Corps, while the F-4N came about by rebuilding and modernizing older F-4B machines to extend their service. The type is recognizable at first glance by the upturned outer wing panels and the drooping horizontal tail surfaces.

The model and the bonus

A kit in 1:32 scale. The real aircraft measured roughly nineteen meters, so the finished model comes out at around sixty centimeters with a span of over thirty centimeters; bear that in mind when planning space in the display cabinet. According to the name, a bonus paint set under the designation ATOM20944 is part of the package.

Building and painting tips

A large scale forgives less than a small one: dry-fit the long fuselage joints, glue them section by section and let each section dry before you move on to the next. Before gluing the fuselage together, check whether the model sits back on its tail and add nose weight if needed. Fit the cockpit out and close it only after the seams have been sanded, or you will blow sanding dust into it. US Navy carrier aircraft of that time wore a gray upper surface and white lower surfaces, a scheme in which every irregularity is clearly visible, so it pays to sand the surface carefully before painting. Keep the weathering within limits: soot traces behind the nozzles, scuffed paint on the walkways and faded areas above the tanks do more than overall dirtying.
