This set from Reskit replaces the plastic main landing gear wheels with resin castings. The tires are done as weighted: they have a contact area with the ground and a slightly bulging sidewall, so that the model looks as if the real weight of the aircraft were resting on the wheels. In the large 1:32 scale this detail is clearly visible. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory to a model that the builder obtains separately.
The Ilyushin Il-2 was a Soviet ground-attack aircraft intended for strikes on ground targets. Its fundamental design feature was the armored shell, into which the engine, the cooling system and the pilot's station were built; thanks to it the aircraft withstood hits from small-caliber weapons. It was powered by a liquid-cooled engine of the AM-38 series, and later production machines had a two-seat cockpit with a gunner. It was built in enormous numbers and operated on the Eastern Front throughout the second half of the war. The landing gear retracted into fairings under the wing and the wheels were sized for operating from field surfaces that were often soft.
First wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent, so that the mold release agent comes off the surface. Cut the casting block off with a saw, level the contact area and sand wet with respiratory protection. Bond with super glue or epoxy. When seating them, make sure that the flat part of the tire points straight down and that both wheels have the same angle. For painting, a dark gray shade for the tire and a separately sprayed hub work well. Because the Il-2 took off from field airstrips, pronounced dust and mud weathering suits the wheels; it is applied with pigments or a thinned wash, working from the tread toward the sidewall.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
