ZEON´S MS GRAY 10ml

The color

A gray paint listed as Zeon MS Gray, manufacturer's part number UG09, in a 10 ml bottle. It belongs to the branch of Gunze Mr.Color put together for Gundam kits, where the name refers to one of the sides of that conflict and to its combat machines. Gray from this range goes onto the large areas of the torso and the limbs, so ten milliliters is reckoned for a whole model, not just for details.

Mixing and thinning

Shake the paint thoroughly before use; the pigment settles to the bottom, and an unmixed shade covers unevenly and dries into patches. For an airbrush, thin it with the thinner of the same range to the consistency of milk; water does not serve to thin this range. Apply it in two or three thin coats with a short pause to let each become tacky. Do not mix thinners of different systems in one coat, as the surface then goes grainy and cures poorly.

Building and painting tips

Gray is rewarding in that shading shows up well on it: a dark wash in the engraved joints and a subtle lightening of the edges turn a flat figure into a machine with volume. Kits in this branch are often joined by snapping together without glue, so it pays to paint the parts before assembly and to leave the mating faces of the pins unpainted, so that the joint holds. A final clear coat ties the surface together according to the look you want.
