Reskit 1:35 – AH-1G Cobra: main rotor with dust and debris deflectors (sand shields), the EARLY version, for the ICM kit is a 3D-printed detail accessory, not a kit. It replaces the original rotor head in plastic – the rotor blades are not included and are taken from the ICM kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a detailed 3D-printed accessory, not a model of the helicopter and not a kit. The set replaces the rotor head of the AH-1G Cobra helicopter from the ICM kit in 1:35 scale and adds sand shields – debris deflectors. The rotor blades are NOT in the set: according to the instructions they are taken from the ICM plastic kit, so without the base kit the accessory on its own will not give a complete rotor. Bear that in mind when buying.
On takeoff and landing in dust, sand or dry snow a helicopter whips up a dense cloud of debris (known to pilots as brownout). That dust is drawn in by the turbine engine and the sand literally abrades the blades of the compressor and the turbine – the engine then loses power and its life falls from thousands of hours to tens. The answer is a shield, cover or deflector that diverts the swirling dust and small debris away from the engine intake. In Vietnam and in later desert service this was an absolutely fundamental item of maintenance and combat readiness.
The AH-1 is the first purpose-built attack helicopter in the world. It arose out of an urgent need in Vietnam, where Huey transport machines needed an armed escort. Bell therefore used the proven engine and rotor system of the Huey and built a completely new, extremely narrow fuselage around them – so narrow that the crew sit in tandem, one behind the other, not side by side. A narrow fuselage means a smaller target for fire from the ground and is the whole point of the design. The AH-1G version is the original, Vietnam one.
Reskit offers two separate sets: an early and a late version. This one is the early one. The sets differ in the form according to the period of service; the manufacturer does not specify the difference more closely – please compare it with photographic documentation of the particular machine you are building, so that you do not buy the other variant.
3D-printed resin is not bonded with cement for polystyrene – use super glue (cyanoacrylate) or epoxy. First wash the parts in warm water with detergent, so that the surface is freed of print resin residue and the paint holds. Dust from sanding is harmful to health: sand wet, do not breathe it in and use respiratory protection. Thin parts break easily – glue them on at the very end of the build.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is not a kit of the helicopter. The base model, the rotor blades, glue and paints are not included in the package.
