This item is not a kit, a paint or a decal. It is a stencil from the Spanish brand Vallejo, a thin sheet with cut-out characters that you lay on a surface and through whose openings you apply paint with an airbrush, a brush or a sponge. The motifs correspond to the lettering of sheet-metal drums, barrels and cans for fuel and oil, that is to props that appear in practically every diorama with vehicles in 1:35 scale.
A decal is a thin layer of print on a carrier film. On an intricate, rough or rippled surface the film catches the light and its edge is given away, so you have to work with a gloss base and with softeners. Markings sprayed through a stencil have no film at all: the paint sits directly on the surface, holds even on the coarse texture of sheet metal and looks from the outset like the mark of real paint. It can also be worked freely: a mark can be left semi-transparent, partly worn away, or oversprayed with rust.
Lay the stencil on and press it down over its whole area; if it holds poorly, use small pieces of low-tack tape or a temporary adhesive. Spray perpendicular to the surface, from a short distance, at low pressure and above all with very thin paint in several light coats. The most common mistake is to lay too much paint down at once, as it then runs under the edge and the character smears. Lift the stencil while the paint has not yet dried completely and clean it at once with the appropriate thinner, so that it stays usable next time as well.
The stencil is an aid for painting. Paints, thinner and a model are not included in the package. Ventilate when spraying and use respiratory protection.
