A printed model of a hammer from the pioneer tools of German vehicles of the Second World War in 1:35 scale. It replaces the tools that are molded in one piece with the body on a kit and cannot be separated from it by paint.
Responsibility details are not available.
German combat and transport vehicles carried a prescribed set of pioneer tools distributed over the fenders, the sides of the hull and the rear. Among them the hammer was one of the most frequently used pieces: it served to straighten track links, to drive in pins and for field repairs, and in period photographs its handle is often worn down to bare wood.
On a classic kit this whole set is molded together with the part it rests on. The hammer is therefore held by a handle fused with the sheet metal, the brackets blend into the surface and the builder has no way of getting a brush between the wood and the steel. The result is recognizable at once: the tools look like an impression in the metal, not like a piece that can be taken off.
A printed part solves the situation from the ground up. The hammer is separate, with the head and the handle clearly divided, and it is fitted in a place where the original relief has been sanded away. That opens up the possibility of painting the wood and the steel in different shades, adding wear and, if you like, leaving the tool somewhere other than its prescribed position, as was common at the front.
The procedure is short: the part is carefully separated from its print support, the area on the model is leveled with a file and the joint is secured with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue. Before painting it is enough to wash the surface so that no greasy film is left on it.
It pays to replace the whole set of tools at once, even if it is acquired piece by piece. As soon as one tool stands free and the others stay fused with the sheet metal, the difference between them does the model more harm than good. It also holds that such small items belong on the vehicle only after the base coat, otherwise their outline is lost under the sprayed layer. Anyone building a scene with a crew can put the hammer into a figure's hand or leave it lying on the engine deck.
