Vallejo 1:35 Tyre Markings Stencil — a stencil for tire tracks

This is a stencil, that is a cut-out mask with the motif of a tire tread, through which paint, pigment or texture paste is transferred onto a surface. The manufacturer is the Spanish brand Vallejo and the product belongs among the aids for building dioramas. It is not a covering paint, it is not a decal and it is certainly not a kit — it is a tool with which you create the track yourself. Paints, pigments and pastes are not included in the package.

Use

• Lay the stencil on a dry surface and press it down over its whole area, so that the medium does not creep under the edges.
• Apply the paint with an airbrush from a short distance in thin coats, or with a sponge almost dry.
• For a three-dimensional track, apply modeling paste through the stencil and draw it level with a spatula.
• Take the stencil off before the medium dries and clean it at once — dried paint on the edges will ruin the next impression.

Work tips

Credibility comes from irregularity. Repeat the tracks in slightly different intensities, let them fade in places and never run them exactly parallel to the edge of the base. A vehicle track has a logic — it starts where the vehicle came from and smears in a curve. If you add dry pigment to the track after taking the stencil off, it loses its sharp edge and blends with the surrounding dust. On a soft surface such as mud or snow, work with paste; on hard asphalt, rather with a thin coat.
