A set of street poles in 1:35 scale from the Vallejo range of scenic accessories. They are props for an urban diorama, not a kit and not a finished model. The exact make-up of the set, the number of pieces and the material of the castings are stated on the packaging.
Dioramas tend to be flat. A vehicle, a piece of wall, a few figures, and everything happens just above the base. A pole is the simplest way of getting height into a composition. The viewer reads the scale of the whole scene from it at once, and the eye gets a vertical to travel up. At the same time the poles work as a frame: placed at the edge of the base they close the scene off and draw attention away from its sharp edge.
A pole has to be vertical, otherwise the scene immediately looks as if there has been an earthquake. Pinning is the surest way: drill a hole in the foot, glue a piece of wire into it and sink that into the base. Glue alone on a small contact area does not last long. Before painting, check that the shaft is straight and free of a parting line; on thin parts every unevenness shows. The painting is rewarding: a dark base, then a lighter overspray from above, a wash into the gaps and a dry brush on the edges. Add mud splashes on the lower part of the pole and dust at its foot. Anyone who wants to go further can run a thin filament between the poles as a line, but take care that a taut thread does not pull the pole over.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a base. Paints, glue and wiring are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
