About product

Wire mesh screens for the Panzer IV Ausf. J in 1:35 scale

This photo-etched set from the Italian brand Royal Model replaces the solid sheet-metal sides of the late Panzer IV with fine wire mesh. The designation Part 1 means that this is the first of two follow-on packages; only both together cover the screens along the whole length of the vehicle.

Why late Panzer IVs had mesh

From the fall of 1944 the Ausf. J version went over from 5 mm sheet-metal shields to lighter mesh, which was called Thoma-Schürzen after General von Thoma. It saved steel and weight and still protected against shaped charge warheads and anti-tank rifles: the charge was set off at a safe distance from the armor. The Ausf. J was the last production version of this type and fought to the end of the war in the east as well as in the west.

How to work with brass

Cut the parts off on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel and sand the burr. Bend the long strips of mesh over a metal ruler or in a bending jig, so that the edge stays straight along its whole length. Degrease the metal before gluing and make the joints with cyanoacrylate glue, because preparations for plastic do not hold on brass. Treat the surface with an adhesion primer, otherwise the paint cracks on the smooth surface.

Who the set suits

  • builders of late versions of the Panzer IV
  • those interested in faithful mesh screens instead of plastic
  • makers of dioramas from the fighting of 1944 and 1945
  • modelers with experience of forming photo-etched metal

The vehicle itself, paints and glues are not supplied with this package.

FAQ

No, the contents are only metal parts for a modification. The plastic base of the vehicle has to be obtained separately.

Yes, the manufacturer has divided the complete set of screens into two packages. On its own this package covers only part of the vehicle.

Cyanoacrylate-based glue has proved itself. Solvent glues for plastic do not work on metal.
