An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet military truck with 6x6 drive. 1:35 scale, made by Trumpeter. Trucks are a rewarding complement to combat vehicles in a diorama, and the ZIL-157 is one of the types that appeared with practically every Eastern Bloc unit.
At the end of the 1950s the ZIL-157 replaced the earlier ZIS-151 and became the basic off-road truck of the Soviet army for decades. Its recognition features are the external hoses of the central tire inflation system, run along the frame to the wheels, and the tall cab with rounded fenders. Power came from a gasoline inline six-cylinder engine, and the design was simple, tough and easy to repair under field conditions. The vehicle served as a flatbed, a tractor, a chassis for workshop and signals bodies and as a carrier of parts of missile systems. It was exported to a whole range of friendly armies and in many countries it served long after the end of the Cold War.
On a truck it pays to work from the frame: the chassis, the transmission and the axles are easier to paint while they are accessible. Finish the cab including its interior before you close it up, because the inside is visible through the windows. Set the tires apart with a matte dark gray shade, and dust the bed and the frame with pigments from the bottom upward. The wooden floor of the load area comes out best with a brown wash and a light dry brush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
