The Bismarck was one of the largest warships Germany ever built. Her main armament consisted of eight 380 mm guns in four twin turrets, backed up by a secondary and an anti-aircraft battery. She sailed on her only combat operation in the spring of 1941, and her fate, including the action in the Denmark Strait and her sinking at the end of May, is one of the best-known episodes of the war at sea. The year in the name refers to exactly this form of the ship.
