About product

Bendix Model J: a 1:48 helicopter kit

A kit in 1:48 scale from AMP, which has long devoted itself to less usual and experimental machines, above all in the field of helicopters. The Bendix Model J belongs precisely in that category: it is a type that practically never reaches the ordinary modeling range. The number of parts, the material of the sprues and the number of decal schemes are not stated here. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Bendix Model J was an American light helicopter of the second half of the 1940s, that is from the time when rotary-wing technology was only becoming established and a number of firms were trying to find a way to a simple and cheap machine for civil use. Typical of that period were small designs with an exposed truss tail, a glazed cabin and a piston engine. Helicopters of that generation were often built in only a few examples and remained at the prototype or small-batch stage.

Building and painting tips

On small helicopters the glazing is the key: the cabin tends to be prominent and the clear parts have to be masked and glued so that they do not fog. Use a cement intended for clear parts, or decal varnish. Fit the rotor mast and the blades only after painting, otherwise they will break while you handle the model. The thin struts and truss parts are prone to deformation; let them cure properly. An airbrush and a brush will both manage the painting, because the areas are small; at the end tie the surface together with matte or satin varnish.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of helicopters and experimental designs in 1:48 scale.
  • Modelers looking for an unusual subject outside the mainstream.
  • More experienced builders: the small parts and the glazing call for patience.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a kit: it is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and glue and paints are not included in the package.

The number of parts and the extent of the decals are not stated here. You will find the figures on the box.

Rather not. The small parts, the thin struts and the prominent glazing call for patience and experience.

Because the real subject is a rotary-wing aircraft, not a fixed-wing airplane; it was built around a rotor mast with blades and a piston engine.
