A kit of the supply ship Mashu of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in 1:700 scale from the Japanese maker Aoshima. It belongs to the Water Line range, so it is a waterline hull model: the lower part of the hull is not in the package and the model is built as a craft on the surface rather than on a stand.
The Mashu is the lead unit of the supply ship class of the same name of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and is an enlarged and improved successor of the older Towada class. With a length of 221 meters, a beam of 27 meters and a standard displacement of around 13500 tons she is among the largest auxiliary craft of the Japanese fleet. Her task is the replenishment of fuel, ammunition and supplies on the open sea, that is, keeping a force in operation without returning to port; the design also reckons with a pair of close-in weapon systems. The ship was completed in 2004, her home port is Maizuru and one sister unit is in service as well.
A long straight hull needs a flat base and patience when gluing the deck superstructures, so that no bent profile arises. The replenishment masts and cranes are the finest parts - glue them on last. Cut the color boundary between the gray superstructure and the hull with masking tape along the edges of the decks. The finished model looks good set into a surface of cast resin or acrylic gel.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
