About product

British QF 6-pdr Mk.V L/50 gun and Besa machine gun tips - 1:72 (MASTER)

The package holds a turned metal barrel of the British 57 mm QF 6-pdr gun in the Mk.V version with a barrel length of L/50, that is in the longer form, and with it the tips of the Besa machine guns. The set is an accessory to a plastic model, not a kit. In 1:72 scale a longer barrel is especially prone to bending and to a visible mold seam; the turned metal part removes both and in addition has an open muzzle.

The real subject

The version of the QF 6-pounder gun with a barrel 50 calibers long came about by lengthening the original shorter tank barrel and improved the ballistic performance of the weapon. It was used on British infantry and cruiser tanks in the later part of the Second World War. The coaxial Besa machine gun was derived from a Czechoslovak design built under license in Britain and on a model it shows mainly through its small muzzle beside the main weapon.

Fitting and painting tips

With a long barrel, make sure the pin seats all the way home, otherwise the barrel will look longer than it should. Drill the hole left by the plastic part on the same axis and preferably in two steps. Bond the metal with super glue and an accelerator, or with epoxy, which gives more time to line it up. When dusting a finished model, wipe it with a soft brush from the turret toward the muzzle and not against it; side pressure on a long barrel can loosen the joint. Degrease it before painting and use a primer for metal, and leave the muzzle darker and lightly polished.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British armor in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who need the longer L/50 version of the barrel
  • those who want to get rid of the mold seam and the bend of a plastic barrel
  • modelers who combine turned parts with photo-etch

This is an accessory for modelers, not a stand-alone kit. The basic model, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The designation L/50 means a length of fifty calibers, while the Mk.III has an L/43 barrel. Choose according to the version your subject carried.

It stays straight, has no mold seam and has a real bore. On a long barrel in a small scale those are the most visible differences.

The end sections of the barrel of the coaxial machine gun. They replace the plastic stub, which is usually blunt and without a hole.

Secure the model by the hull and not by the barrel, and leave free space around the barrel when packing it. Side pressure puts the most strain on the joint.
