A multilayer colored decal for the cockpit of the Chinese F-8II interceptor, known under the name Finback, in 1:72 scale. It carries the panel with its gauges, the side consoles and the seat belts. Made for the Trumpeter kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-8II type came about by reworking an earlier machine into which the air flowed through an opening in the nose. The new nose freed up room for a larger radar and the intakes moved to the sides of the fuselage, which gave the aircraft a look close to the machines flying elsewhere in the world at the time. A pair of engines and a large delta wing made it a fast machine meant to strike at high-flying targets. It got into the air in the mid-1980s and served in various forms for decades.
The pilot's station carries a combination of round gauges and rectangular panels with rows of buttons. It is exactly the rows of small buttons that disappear first under hand painting, because the individual pieces are smaller than the mark of the finest brush. A printed layer renders them as separate elements with a light border and a height of their own.
Once applied, the inside stops being uniform. The dark face of the radar display separates itself from its surroundings, the belts over the seat add a light band and the colored handles create focal points where the eye stops. The cockpit thereby looks lived in, even when closed. With darker interiors this tends to be the only way to avoid the impression of an empty tub under the glazing without resorting to exaggerated lightening of the shades.
The set is prepared for the cockpit of the kit from Trumpeter; the model is bought separately.
