About product

The Douglas P-70 Nighthawk in 1:72 scale from Special Hobby

A kit of the twin-engine P-70 night fighter in 1:72 scale in an edition that points to the fact that it was the first American machine built for night combat. The model comes from the Czech manufacturer Special Hobby and represents a less usual branch in the development of a well-known attack aircraft.

The real subject

The P-70 came about as a conversion of the twin-engine Douglas A-20 attack aircraft at a time when the US Army Air Forces urgently needed a machine able to intercept at night and had nothing more suitable available. An airborne radar of the period was fitted in the nose, with its operator taking the bombardier's place, and a pack with forward-firing cannon was added under the fuselage. It was powered by radial engines and its main weakness was insufficient performance at the higher altitudes where enemy aircraft operated. Even so it did its job in the Pacific in 1942 and 1943, where it served until it was replaced by a purpose-built night fighter of the new generation. The aircraft wore an all-black or very dark finish with subdued markings.

Building and painting tips

Start the build with the cockpit and the nose section - on night machines the interior and the radar equipment tend to be clearly visible through the glazing. Try the engine nacelles and the lower gun pack dry first. For a black finish, remember that pure black kills detail in a small scale; it pays to reach for a very dark gray-black shade and to shade the individual panels slightly. Apply a gloss clear coat before the decals, and once they are settled unify the surface with a matte top coat. The radar antenna rods are small and break easily, so fit them only at the end of the build.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American aircraft of the Second World War in 1:72 scale
  • Anyone interested in the beginnings of night interception and in airborne radar
  • Modelers with experience of kits from smaller manufacturers
  • Builders drawn to unusual variants of well-known types

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a conversion of the twin-engine Douglas A-20 attack aircraft. It received an airborne radar in the nose and a pack with forward-firing cannon under the fuselage.

It lacked performance at the higher altitudes where enemy aircraft operated. It therefore served as a stopgap until a purpose-built night fighter arrived.

Use a very dark gray-black shade instead of pure black and shade the individual panels lightly. The details then stay legible even in a display case.
