Three Spitfires of the Mk IX series of the Polish squadrons of the RAF in 1:72 scale. The package also holds masks for the canopy and for the yellow wing stripes.

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX came about as a quick answer to the German Fw 190: a two-stage Merlin 61 was built into the airframe of the Mk V and the machine won back its advantage at altitude. It was produced in forms tuned for various heights and became the most numerous version of the whole type. This sheet in 1:72 scale captures three aircraft of the Polish squadrons of the Royal Air Force.
The three cover three different theaters: the defense of the British Isles, the advance across liberated Belgium and the Italian front, where No. 318 Squadron carried out reconnaissance and attack duties. The set therefore allows three models to be built that together tell the whole story of the Polish airmen in the west.
Masks for the yellow stripes on the wing leading edge and a pair of masks for the cockpit canopy belong with the sheet. The yellow stripes tend to be the greatest trouble: printed decals let the underlying color show through them, whereas paint sprayed through a mask comes out deep and with no film edges. The Mk IX series changed during production, and between early and late examples the exhausts, radiators and the shape of the rudder all differ, so check against the serial number of the aircraft you choose which form your kit represents. Plastic parts for the Spitfire are not in the package.
