A smoke gray from the Gunze Acrysion acrylic line. A subdued gray veil for smoked glass, exhaust stains and gentle shading.

Smoke has no sharp boundary. It dissipates, settles unevenly and where there is a lot of it, it takes brightness away from a surface without covering it completely. The modeling smoke shade imitates that property: it is applied in very thin veils and each further one darkens the surface only a touch.
Most of the work with it tends to be on glass. Darkened canopies, the smoked windows of sports cars and the visors of helmets get exactly the semi-translucent character that a black paint will never give. The second large field of use is exhaust stains behind the exhausts of aircraft, around gun muzzles, above the funnels of ships and behind the nozzles of rocket motors.
The consistency is the key thing with this paint. Heavily thinned it can be laid in many coats and the trail stays soft; thick, on the other hand, it makes a blotch with a visible edge. Do not spare the water or Acrysion Thinner, then, and flush the tools after work with Acrysion Tool Cleaner so that no pigment settles in the nozzle.
A practical aid to finish with: always follow the direction of the trail according to the airflow around the real machine. Smoke is drawn backwards and widens out, it never ends sharply in the middle of a surface, and it is precisely this detail that decides whether the weathering will look convincing.
