AFV Fantasy Desert Yellow

The sand yellow shade Desert Yellow

A modeling paint from the brand Vallejo in the shade Desert Yellow, that is a sand yellow. It is one of the shades reached for when building equipment deployed in the desert and in dry country. The shade is light and warm, so on a model it takes shadows and highlights well and further layering is easy to build on it.

What it is suited to

Sand yellows are used as a base layer over the whole surface of a vehicle, over which patches of another color, dust and traces of wear are then applied. With such a light shade in particular it pays to work step by step: first an even covering coat, then a slight brightening of the horizontal surfaces and finally dirtying of the lower areas. A light base also makes later work with a wash much easier, because every shadow that runs is immediately visible on it.

Work tips

• stir the contents thoroughly before use, so that the pigment is even
• the method of application, the thinner and the thinning ratio are given by the manufacturer on the package
• apply in thin coats, because a heavy coat hides fine relief
• light shades cover less well, so count on more passes than with dark colors
• judge the shade only once it has dried, because wet it looks darker
• test the shade on an offcut, not straight on a finished model
