R-23T guided missile in 1:32 scale from Temp Models

The set brings a 3D printed replica of the R-23T guided missile in 1:32 scale from Temp Models. It is not a model of an aircraft but underwing armament with which you complete a finished build. The printed rendition gives the crisper edges of the stabilizing and control surfaces and finer surface detail than injection-molded plastic offers, and it does without a seam line across the whole body of the missile.

The real subject

The R-23 is a Soviet medium-range air-to-air missile developed as the main armament of the MiG-23. The version designated T is infrared guided, so once launched it holds the target on its own. The R-23R and the R-23T were carried together, because radar and heat guidance complement one another: each has different strengths according to the weather and to the position of the target relative to the sun.

Building and painting tips

The parts are printed from resin and are held only by thin supports. Cut them off with a sharp scalpel as close to the part as possible, sand the marks down with fine sandpaper and protect your airways while sanding. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint holds longer on a smooth print if you lay a thin coat of primer under it. Paint the underwing weapons separately and glue them onto the model only after the landing gear and the cockpit are finished.
