IJN Type21 Camouflage Color

The color

The paint belongs to the Mr.Color line and carries the manufacturer part number C604. By its name it is a camouflage shade of the Imperial Japanese Navy carried under the designation Type 21. Numbered designations of exactly this sort are typical of Japanese equipment: they are not descriptive color names but official numbers from period regulations, which is why you will meet them in references and in kit instructions too, where the shade is given by the same number.

Where it is useful

The shade is intended for the equipment of the Imperial Japanese Navy, that is for models where agreement with the period subject matters a great deal. Check the exact identification and the match with a particular period and type of equipment in the manufacturer color chart and in the references for your own subject; on Japanese equipment the shades differed from shipyard to shipyard and from period to period.

How to work with the paint

The thinner and the thinning ratio follow the manufacturer instructions on the packaging; use the thinner intended for this line. Stir the paint thoroughly before use, because the pigment settles to the bottom. Spray it in several light coats and let them flash off; a heavy coat floods the engraved detail and dries more slowly. Wash and degrease the surface beforehand. Use an airbrush on larger areas and keep the brush for small finishing work. Work in a well ventilated space and close the bottle carefully after use, so that the paint does not thicken.
