Matte white Insignia White from Vallejo — a water-thinnable acrylic in a 17 ml dropper bottle. The shade belongs to the Model Air line, which uses finely ground pigments and comes pre-thinned from the factory, ready to spray straight from the bottle. The thicker Model Color line, by contrast, is designed for the brush and must be thinned for the airbrush. It is a modeling paint, not a kit.

What the color represents

The name refers to the white of national markings and lettering — the white used to paint stars, insignia bands, code letters, and technical stenciling, in practice mostly on American aircraft. It is not purely a marking color: the same shade is also used on underside surfaces and on conspicuous identification bands across wings and fuselages. Compared to an ordinary modeling white, it is slightly muted and matte, so it does not look garish on a model.

Use

• Shake the bottle thoroughly before use — the pigment settles at the bottom.
• Sprayed straight from the dropper bottle at roughly 0.5–1 bar; it can be thinned further with water or airbrush thinner from the same brand if needed.
• White has poor coverage — plan on several thin coats. Never pour on one heavy coat, as it would fill in engraving and detail.
• Spray onto a light base (a white or light gray primer). Over a dark color or bare plastic, white shows through and the shade shifts.
• Paint markings and bands over dried paint using masking tape; seal the edges with a light coat of base color so the paint does not bleed underneath.
• White can also be used for modulation and highlighting other shades — add it drop by drop, as it lightens very quickly.
