Medium Gray is an acrylic from the Vallejo Model Air range. The shade matches the name: a medium neutral gray with no blue or brown undertone, a versatile color that suits standalone areas as well as a starting point for mixing lighter and darker grays. The binder is acrylic and water-thinned, and the bottle is a 17 ml dropper bottle. The Model Air range normally sprays straight from the bottle.
A neutral gray is a rewarding shade for techniques that work with layers showing through. The method is simple: over a darker base, the gray is sprayed in thin, partly translucent coats so that the base still reads in the shadows and in the engraved lines. The centers of the panels are then lightened by mixing in a lighter tone and the edges are left darker. The result is a surface that does not look as flat as poured paint. The key is patience and plenty of thin passes; every heavy coat wipes the effect out. The reverse order works just as well, with the gray laid over the whole surface and the shadows drawn in afterwards with a darker shade or a wash.
For modelers who work with layering and color modulation, and for anyone who wants a reliable neutral gray on the palette for mixing.
Keep out of the reach of children. Ventilate while spraying and use respiratory protection. Protect from frost.
